Nestled high in the Eastern Hills, Rutherford Hill Winery commands a spectacular view overlooking the Rutherford bench of Napa Valley. It is from a handful of the most select Napa vineyards that Rutherford Hill continues its tradition of crafting legendary wines. The rest of the world started to take notice of napa Valley wines in 1976. Whilst everyone was concentrating on Cabernet Sauvignon the founders at Rutherford Hill indentified a similar soil in their valley to those found in Pomerol, the climate as well was slightly cooler than the rest of Napa, creating perfect conditions to grow Merlot. They became the first pioneers of Merlot based wines in Napa and continue with this tradition of championing Merlot.
The wine ferments in stainless steel followed by 18 months maturing in French oak barrels. On the nose the fruit shows dark cherry, fig, plum and a hint of nutmeg. It is medium bodied on the palate with freshness, bright acidity and notes of pomegranate as well as velvety dark plum and cherry fruit with notes of mocha. Definitely a foodie wine. Perfect with a Sunday roast, steak or rack of lamb.
