The vineyard borders Puligny 1er Garenne. It is named after the tooth like stones that form the gate posts. This is a Handford favourite and as good as the great 2018 in quality. Pure, clear and focussed nose of apricot skin, citrus flower and macademia nuts, and with spritzy, orange and pink grapefruit notes on the palate. This has all the tension, tender spice and minerality of a Puligny. Very high class. . 2023 to 2029.

GERARD IS A KINDLY, ROBUST AND RUDDY FACED FARMER WHOSE LIFE HAS BEEN DEDICATED TO HIS VINEYARDS. HE HAS REBUILT SOME UNUSUALLY PRECARIOUS TERRACES, REPLANTED AND MAINTAINED HIS CHARDONNAY VINES WITH PRIDE.
THERE ARE TWO SAINT AUBINS ON OFFER (I NO LONGER BUY THE UNWOODED VERSION AND THE BLENDED 1ER CRU). THE FIRST IS ENDEARINGLY KNOWN AS ‘DOG’S TOOTH’ BY MANY CLIENTS. IN FACT THE STONES WHICH DEMARCATE THE LAND LOOK LIKE GIANT DOGS TEETH. THE SECOND TAKES ITS NAME FROM THE CATS THAT BASK IN THE SUN. FOR ME, LA CHATENIèRE IS ONE OF THE BEST WINES OF THE VILLAGE AND REPRESENTS VERY GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY.
