Van Loggerenberg Graft Syrah 2020

SKU: 30464 Categories: ,

Grapes from the same Polkadraai Hills vineyard that Reneen Borman utilizes for Sons of Sugarland but so different in styling, this wine undergoing 100% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting nine months in second-and third-fill 500-litre barrels and the result being altogether darker and more textural than what Borman comes up with. On the nose, a heady mix of red and black berries, pepper, dried herbs, olive, and violets while the palate has good weight, fresh acidity and firm but by no means coarse tannins – a dense and savoury affair (alcohol is 13.5%). 95/100 5 stars Platter Guide 2022

Winemaking Approach

Producer Information: Van Loggerenberg

Lukas van Loggerenberg. The name is quite a mouthful - but then, so are his wines!

Despite owning no vineyards, he has managed to make quite an impact since we first tasted his Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Cinsault a few years back.

Devoted to expressing particular patches of earth, Lukas reminds visitors to his makeshift cellar that terroir is not everything and that some winemakers just have the touch and an instinct to make great wine. He likes to think of himself as “a farmer rather than a winemaker”.

All Lukas's wines are made without the aid of any additives, including commercial yeast.
