Warwick Trilogy is a blend of 3 Bordeaux varieties (hence its name) – Cabernet Sauvignon 64%, Cabernet Franc 18% and Merlot 18%. The wine displays an intense brick red dark colour. On the nose it expresses intense cedar, herbaceous spiciness and lots of wild berries and black olive aromas. On the palate the full rounded feel of the well-ripened tannins slowly gives way to roasted almonds, vanilla and coffee flavours, and another hit of wild berries on the aftertaste.
Producer Information: Warwick Estate
Then a fruit farm, Warwick only emerged on the forefront of South Africa’s wine scene when Stan and Norma Ratcliffe bought the estate in 1964 and started developing the land with an extensive focus on the classic Bordeaux varieties. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Through determination and commitment, Norma Ratcliffe became one of the Cape’s first female winemakers – and one of its most illustrious wine personalities, whose legacy is immortalised in the Warwick “First Lady” range.
Almost all the estate’s vineyards are planted on the foothills and mid-slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain with vineyards ranging from 240 to 360 metres above sea level. This elevated position exposes the vineyards to cooling winds during the spring and summer seasons. A variety of slopes, aspects and the prevalence of different clay-rich soil types result in unique pockets of terroir, allowing us to produce wines with complexity and character. Many of the vineyards are found on cooler south and southwestern facing slopes that produce some of the best Cabernet Franc in the Stellenbosch region.
